About J. LeMay

Since I was a kid, I’ve loved drawing and painting – and books. My mom and sister and I made regular trips to the library when I was growing up, and walked out with huge stacks of new books mixed with old favorites. Inspired, I spent many hours reading and then writing my own short stories and making pictures to go with them.
Now I work as a designer, artist and writer, still love to read, and also teach graphic design part-time at Santa Barbara City College. Writing and illustrating children’s picture books is fun and challenging, and I’m happy to be a member of SCBWI.
As a young adult I “discovered” street painting when a good friend, an artist and mentor, sponsored a square for me at the I Madonnari Santa Barbara Street Painting festival as a surprise – a square of pavement to fill with a chalk-rendered image. I panicked, and then got to work figuring out what to do. After that first painting of an Egyptian scene featuring hieroglyphics, pyramids and a desert sunset, I was hooked.
